AEP

Introduction

By definition, agritourism is a form of tourism that is developed on the principle of sustainable development and in the best way valorizes rural areas, agricultural activities, and natural and cultural historic resources including autochonous traditional products.

Agritourism is one of the most developed forms of selective tourism in the world. In Croatia, agritourism is only 1% of total tourism, while in Europe this average is 10–20%.

Croatia has natural resources in autochtonous traditional values which from one aspect enables tourists quality vacations in coordination with nature, while from another creates presumptions to improve the social – economic picture of husbandries in agritourism.

At the same time, however, we face certain constraints:

-          insufficient awareness and knowledge about autochtonous sorts of plants, animals and products

-          insufficiently developed skills and know-how due to a lack of equipment and new technology

In light of the above-mentioned facts, the need to develop agritourism in Croatia is relevant. Research shows that the main factors for agritourism development are education and the creation of new jobs. It is for this reason that a new profession, agritouristic technician, is being introduced in Poljoprivredna škola.

A lack of practical skills among our students stimulated us to build an agrotouristic polygon in our school area and dislocated area, “Grad Mladih.”

About AEP

The AEP project is supporting the development and improvement of Croatian agritourism through education, oriented towards the use of Croatian agricultural capacity in tourism development, in order to stimulate new employment (agritouristic technician) and give new momentum to existing SMEs. Our target groups are teachers and students of similar schools, SMEs, farmers, cooperatives and NGOs in Croatia, who will acquire new skills and know-how to improve agritourism in various regions of Croatia. The model produces value added for tourists visiting Zagreb. The main activities consisted of the creation of an Agritouristic Educational Polygon in our school area and partly dislocated at Grad Mladih which includes new practicums; promotion and workshops for teachers, students, farmers, SMEs and citizens (in Zagreb, Kastela, Pozega, Ilok); study visits abroad (Slovenia, Italy, Austria). The project created new partnerships; networks locally, nationally and internationally; IT and know-how transfer
